Q: Why do we have to bother with the Ten Commandments today?
Weren't they done away with in the New Covenant?
A: Absolutely not. That is a dangerous myth, perpetuated by misled leaders and meme culture.
We are expected to uphold God's laws as much today as the Israelites were when they first received them through Moses.
The New Covenant means that instead of having to sacrifice animals and agriculture every day to atone for our sins, Jesus died as the once-and-for-all, perfect sacrifice for our sins.
That ensures believers' salvation.
However, with our sinful human nature since the fall of Adam and Eve, we are powerless to keep the commandments ourselves, without the intervention of the Holy Spirit.
When we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior, the Holy Spirit begins to guide us to follow the laws.
God writes them on our hearts so it actually becomes easier to do so!
Now, some people think that's it, and we can then do whatever we want and still receive salvation.
But as James warned, "Faith without works is dead."
Your place in God's Kingdom (which will be right here on earth) depends not only on your faith,
but on how well you follow God's Word and His laws, including repentance.
Do you want to sidle your way into the Kingdom,
or even risk being denied entrance and cast into the lake of fire?
Or would you like to be celebrated and given a favored role for everlasting life
with our Father and Jesus?
Jesus illustrated this over and over in His parables.
And in Jesus' own words:
"For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away,
not the smallest letter or stroke of a letter shall pass from the Law, until all is accomplished."
~ Matthew 5:18
To be perfectly clear, it is not truthful to say you love Jesus if you don't regularly repent for your sins and follow the Holy Spirit's guidance as you try to follow all of the Commandments.
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’"
- Matthew 7:21-23
“If you love me, you will obey my commandments. I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you."
